It begins just before World War II and follows her through her upbringing in a family of ten people. The story wends through the influence of her father, a former Mayor of New York City, her mother, a socialite from the Bronx. It also describes her relationship with her Mammy(grandmother), who was a member of the household as well as her six siblings and the intermingling of their lives.
